Bamburgh Castle

I love Bamburgh Castle.

The village of Bamburgh itself is always a great place to stop off, have a cuppa and do some exploring; this is a beautiful corner of England, best explored with a rangefinder camera and a waterproof coat (or a surf board and a wet suit)

Bamburgh Castle

A walk up the drive to Bamburgh Castle is the best place to stop and take stock; this is a fantastic castle and an important site. Not many places in the UK can match this, if you close your eyes and listen to the sea, you can hear history unfolding in your head.

Some Wikipedia history on the castle itself

Built on a dolerite outcrop, the location was previously home to a fort of the native Britons known as Din Guarie and may have been the capital of the British kingdom of the region (see Gododdin, Bryneich and Hen Ogledd)[2] from the realm’s foundation in c.420 until 547, the year of the first written reference to the castle. In that year the citadel was captured by the Anglo-Saxon ruler Ida of Bernicia (Beornice) and became Ida’s seat. It was briefly retaken by the Britons from his son Hussa during the war of 590 before being relieved later the same year.

His grandson Æðelfriþ passed it on to his wife Bebba, from whom the early name Bebbanburgh was derived. The Vikings destroyed the original fortification in 993.

The Normans built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. After Robert was captured, his wife continued the defence until coerced to surrender by the king’s threat to blind her husband.

Bamburgh then became the property of the reigning English monarch. Henry II probably built the keep. As an important English outpost, the castle was the target of occasional raids from Scotland.[citation needed] During the civil wars at the end of King John’s reign, it was under the control of Philip of Oldcoates.[3] In 1464 during the Wars of the Roses, it became the first castle in England to be defeated by artillery, at the end of a nine-month siege by Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick.

The Forster family of Northumberland[4] provided the Crown with twelve successive governors of the castle for some 400 years until the Crown granted ownership to Sir John Forster. The family retained ownership until Sir William Forster (d. 1700) was posthumously declared bankrupt, and his estates, including the castle, were sold to Lord Crew, Bishop of Durham (husband of his sister Dorothy) under an Act of Parliament to settle the debts.

The castle deteriorated but was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong, who completed the restoration.

In 1944, during the Second World War, the Royal Navy corvette HMS Bamborough Castle was named after it.

The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family, and is opened to the public. It also hosts weddings and corporate events. It has been used as a film location since the 1920s, featuring in films such as Ivanhoe (1982), El Cid (1961), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Elizabeth (1998) and both the 1971 and 2015 adaptions of Macbeth.

Wensleydale day out

The sun was shining and the wind was blowing, Masham sheep fair had been ticked off and it was a Sunday; it was time for a Wensleydale day out.

Bolton Castle always offers some amazing photographic opportunities; so this time we ventured into the castle as well as out and about walking between Aysgarth falls, Redmire and the surrounding lower Wensleydale rolling dale.

What a great place to visit, if you live round the corner like us, or you are coming from farther afield – Wensleydale is absolutely beautiful, unspoilt and full of interesting history.

It’s not the first time I have featured Castle Bolton, bit on a sunny day like this, there is no better place to be with my Leica.

New Light Exhibition and  Prize

We were lucky to get in and see the last day of the the New Light Prize Exhibition, which had opened in October 2015 at the Bowes Museum and now I think moves on to the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate and then onto London in June.

I only took a couple of snaps but found a link to this year’s Exhibition where all the work can be viewed on the What’s New page.

Today is a big day. Today the great British people will vote at the polling stations up and down the UK and elect a government via the democratic process. That is a good thing, and let’s hope that whoever wins, we can afford to put some food on the table of every family up and down the land.

Was out on my bike last night, speeding through the yellow fields of rapeseed; it’s everywhere you look at the moment, around 60 million tons of rapeseed are produced in the world each year, In Europe, rapeseed is primarily cultivated for animal feed, owing to its very high lipid and medium protein content. I have been out taking some snaps and will be posting a blog on it later…

Stirling Castle, located in Stirling, is one of the largest and most important castles, both historically and architecturally, inScotland. The castle sits atop Castle Hill, an intrusive crag, which forms part of the Stirling Sill geological formation. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs, giving it a strong defensive position. Its strategic location, guarding what was, until the 1890s, the farthest downstream crossing of the River Forth, has made it an important fortification from the earliest times. I thought we all deserved a stay at Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver.

Vancouver’s glittering city skyline against mountainous backdrops

As you tuck into a sumptuous breakfast, a sweeping view of the vibrant metropolis that is Vancouver unfolds before you. Settling into your tastefully furnished surroundings, you catch a glimpse of the majestic firs of Stanley Park in the distance. A leisurely stroll along the sapphire blue waters of its lakes would be heavenly. Nestled between the Coast Mountain Range and Pacific Ocean, there is certainly plenty to do in this urban oasis. You plan to take it a day at a time. For now, Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver, beckons.

Carrying on the theme of work from yesterday, why am I sat at my Macbook in the kitchen, not being able to sleep and reflecting on all those things that go around in
your head in the middle of the night?

What is it about the modern world that means we are never really 100% at work or at rest or even at play, just always somewhere suspended between them all, not being able to do any one of the three funtions justice, or is it just me?

I do know that my dad's first job offer letter was dated 9th September 1957, to train as an Engineer under the chief civil engineer, British Railways, York; telling him to bring a setsquare, pen and ink on his first day of work, so I would like to think that it was around that time 60 or so years ago.

This shot was taken in October 2006 on a blustery day in Paris outside the Louvre. I have always liked the way it looks monochrome but is not, in fact it was taken on a small Nikon compact, a Coolpix L3. That was a belter of a little camera.
And Paris was just as much fun then as it always is now.

To finish off my week of teeth and faces, I took this shot of my son's amazing brace in November 2008 on my first Leica, a C-LUX 2. His teeth are still perfect, unlike my photography, which has become more blurred as the cameras have become more sophisticated.

It's the weekend, two more days of skies to gaze at. Penultimate shot this week has to be from Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This Henry Moore sky shot was taken in 2009 and

Born in Castleford, West Yorkshire, Henry Moore (1898–1986) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. This major exhibition, in collaboration with TheHenry Moore Foundation, takes a fresh approach to Moore’s work by considering his profound relationship with land, which was fundamental to his practice and fuelled his visual vocabulary.

An early start and a good excuse to go to Another Place - a piece of modern sculpture
by Antony Gormley. It consists of 100 [1]cast iron sculptures of the artist's own body, facing towards the sea.
After being displayed at several locations in Europe, it become permanently erected at Crosby Beach in northwestern England. The work was controversial in the local area due to issues such as possible economic gain or environmental damage from tourism.
A meeting on 7 March 2007 by Sefton Council accepted proposals that would allow the
sculptures to be kept permanently at Crosby Beach in place of being moved to
New York.[2][3]

Madrid and the Museo del Prado

Madrid (/məˈdrɪd/, Spanish: [maˈðɾið], locally: [maˈðɾiθ, -ˈðɾi]) is the capital and largest city of Spain. The city is located on the Manzanares River in the centre of both the country and theCommunity of Madrid (which comprises the city of Madrid, its conurbation and extended suburbs and villages); this community is bordered by theautonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. Setting off from the waters of Vancouver harbour in a six seat floatplane to Whistler,

If you have about $1,500 dollars to spare (2009 prices, may have gone up a bit!) then there is no better way to transport your loved ones from downtown Vancouver harbout, up through 120 km. of amazing countryside to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
I guarantee you willl not regret this investment – charter your own pilot and plane with Whistler Air, it is an experience that will stay with you forever!

is no better way to see off the month than with a walk at Fountains Abbey, beautiful,
cold and fresh. We love this place.

Temple Mill is a Grade I listed building built by Ignatious Bonomi between the years
1838 – 1843 for John Marshall and Company for use as a flax spinning mill.
The building represents the zenith of the Marshall Mills flax business in Leeds and
had acquired a legendary reputation within a few years of its construction.
The Egyptian design has been attributed to the Egyptologist Joseph Bonomi, the
architect's brother, Egypt having an important flax industry in the ancient world.

Hello 2015.

I want this year to be positive and filled with fun, so I thought of a blogging activity that would pose both a practical and mental challenge for the 365 days ahead, as well as being a showcase for my photographs, old and new.

I am going to post and tweet one image each day of this year. One image, one day, one life.

Every image will mean something to me, and I hope bring some happiness to you, here is to looking forward in 2015, Happy New Year indeed.
